"Starlight" was the original working title of Michael Jackson's perennial 'Thriller' album. I was reminded of that as his majestic constellational silhouette towered over the audience after the conclusion of Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour performance in Columbia, SC, on April 27. Sadly, I never had the privilege of seeing him in concert, and while there is no substitute for that kind of supreme talent, the show does justice to his legacy by featuring his music and videos along with spectacular acrobatics, emotional interludes, and elaborate indoor pyrotechnics. Many of the performers had even toured with Michael over the years, and Michael himself had been a big fan of Cirque. The only thing the show was missing has been gone since June 25, 2009, and his absence looms far larger than this projection.
