Trooper fired after being charged with DUI

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina trooper has been fired after he was charged with drunken driving following a single-car crash.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release issued Monday that 24-year-old Joseph Buchwald was arrested after Sunday’s crash in Columbia.

No one was injured in the crash and Lott says Buchwald was off-duty at the time of the accident.

Buchwald was released on bail Sunday. A telephone listing could not be found for him.

Highway Patrol spokesman Sid Gaulden told multiple media outlets that Buchwald was fired. Gaulden says Buchwald was hired in January and began patrolling in May after completing trooper school.
