3rd Army’s move detailed for summer 2011

SUMTER, S.C. (AP) – Army officials are laying out the details behind the 3rd Army’s planned move from Fort McPherson in Atlanta to South Carolina’s Shaw Air Force Base next summer.

The Item of Sumter reported Wednesday that Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Earles told a local government panel the transfer will take place in four stages from May through August of next year.

Earles told the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments that 1,400 soldiers, civilian Army employees and contractors will arrive in groups of between 260 to 440 people at a time.

The move was ordered by the Pentagon’s Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 2005.

The 3rd Army is responsible for supporting troops in the Middle East and central Asia.
