3 troopers injured in Taser training this year
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – Three South Carolina troopers have been injured this year during training using Taser stun guns.
The State newspaper of Columbia reported Sunday that one injury was so severe that the trooper is still out on workers’ compensation.
State Public Safety Department director Mark Keel would not discuss the specifics of the injuries, but said they came while 300 troopers were being trained on how to use the weapon. That compares with zero injuries for three other police agencies in the Columbia area who have trained more than 900 officers on the Taser with no injuries.
As part of training, officers are actually hit with the Taser to learn how the electric charge delivered by the guns’ fishhooks feels to a suspect.
