School shooting suspect to stay in custody
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) – A South Carolina high school student accused of shooting at a campus police officer and planting explosive devices around the school will stay in state custody for now.
A Family Court judge in Conway ruled Friday that the 14-year-old student will stay with the Department of Juvenile Justice until another hearing October 5th. The teen may also have a competency hearing.
School resource officer Erik Karney struggled with the Socastee High School freshman Tuesday afternoon. The student shot at Karney, who was injured after the bullet struck a wall. Karney was treated and released from a hospital.
Prosecutor Greg Hembree says he wants to try the teen as an adult and charge him with attempted murder and attempted use of weapon of mass destruction for act of terrorism.
