Urban League marks big milestone
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Columbia Urban League marked a milestone Wednesday.
The local chapter is joining chapters across the country to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Urban League.
The Columbia Urban League held a luncheon Wednesday afternoon at Brooklyn Baptist Church in celebration of the anniversary.
Those who attended say they are looking forward to another century at the forefront of civil rights and social justice.
J.T. McLawhorn, Jr. with the Columbia Urban League says, “Over the years, the Urban League has evolved as a bridge to help African-Americans primarily from the south to the industrialized communities. Over the years, it has also taken up the focus on improving race relations and equal opportunity in this country.”
Mayor Steve Benjamin issued a proclamation in recognition of the Urban League’s service to the community for the past 100 years.
