Florence woman killed, home burned

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) — Florence police say they think a woman was killed in her home before it was set on fire.

Police Chief Anson Shells says firefighters called to a home Wednesday morning found a body when they went inside.

Florence County Coroner M.G. Matthews says the body of 44-year-old Mariam Burgess has been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy.

But Shells says it appears she was killed before the fire.

He says investigators don’t have a motive yet and are trying to find witnesses.
