Gamecocks move up in polls

COLUMBIA, S.C. (USC SID) — The University of South Carolina football team continued its ascent in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches polls, it was announced today. The Gamecocks (4-0, 2-0 SEC) moved up to No. 6 in both polls, climbing one notch in the AP poll and two spots in the USA Today/Coaches poll following a 31-10 dismantling of Missouri (2-2, 0-2 SEC) on Saturday afternoon. It’s Carolina’s highest AP ranking since they checked in at No. 6 after defeating North Carolina in 2007 to improve to 6-1 on the season. It‘s just the fifth time in school history that Carolina has been ranked sixth or better in the AP poll. The top six teams in both polls are identical. Alabama sits atop both polls, followed by Oregon, LSU, Florida State, Georgia and South Carolina. The Gamecocks have been ranked among the nation‘s Top-10 teams according to the Associated Press in seven-straight polls, dating back to last season. That matches the school record set during the 1984 campaign. The Gamecocks are tied with Stanford for the fifth-longest consecutive weeks streak of being ranked in the Top-25. Only Alabama, LSU, Oregon and Oklahoma have been ranked for more consecutive weeks than the Gamecocks and Cardinal. South Carolina will travel to Lexington to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (1-3, 0-1 SEC) on Saturday, September 29. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
