Webb Still Out, Holmes To Bullpen This Weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Gamecock closer Tyler Webb will miss his second straight SEC weekend series because of tenderness in his pitching elbow. On local radio Monday, Carolina coach Chad Holbrook said he will go with senior Colby Holmes in the closer role in this weekend’s home series against Kentucky. The Gamecocks are ranked #17 by Baseball America. The Wildcats are #18. USC is tied with Florida in the SEC East division standings at with an 8-7 conference record. Kentucky is right behind at 7-8. Holbrook says senior Nolan Belcher will start the series opener Friday night. Sophomore Jordan Montgomery is set to get the Saturday start with freshman Jack Wynkoop likely to start the series finale Sunday. Webb is tied for the SEC lead with 11 saves this season. He has a 1-1 record with a 0.75 ERA and has 36 Ks in 24 innings. Holmes has a 4-2 record with a 4.28 ERA. He has 31 Ks in 40 innings this season. The Gamecocks (27-10) get back on the field Tuesday night at home against the College of Charleston. Former Lugoff-Elgin standout Forrest Koumas will get the start for the Gamecocks against former A.C. Flora standout Player Loving.
