High school soccer player who died had previously collapsed

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — School officials say a Greenville teenager who died during high school soccer tryouts had collapsed during a cross country meet a year ago but recently had been cleared to play sports by his doctor.

The Greenville News (http://grnol.co/1Jg8FGb ) reports that 16-year-old Titus Martin Jr. died Monday evening after he collapsed on the soccer field at Legacy Charter School’s Parker campus. Coaches performed CPR on Martin, but he was pronounced dead at a local hospital later that evening.

Greenville County coroner Parks Evans says Martin had collapsed during a cross country meet last year, but he didn’t know what role, if any, that incident might have played in his death.

Evans says an autopsy was performed Tuesday, but further tests are needed before a cause of death can be determined.
