MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) _ Horry County leaders are tired of their county being trashed. So now there will be no tolerance for litterbugs.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that county council decided Tuesday that litterbugs will no longer be given warnings when they are caught tossing trash. Now they will simply be written a ticket.

Councilman Al Allen proposed the new policy. Allen says secondary roads are being trashed and it seems residents, not tourists, are the culprits. The county is on the Grand Strand, the heart of the state’s $19 billon tourism industry.

Officials say the so-called litter index, an annual survey of trash along the roads, shows the situation is getting worse.

Littering in South Carolina carries a minimum fine of $200 and can mean 30 days in jail.
