Deputy Constable Shot 6 Times ‘Ambush-Style’ in Houston

(ABC News) – A deputy constable was shot six times outside a convenience store in Houston early this morning, according to authorities.

Alden Clopton, an 11-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and a father, was shot in an “ambush-style” attack between midnight and 12:15 a.m., officials said.

Clopton’s wife is also a police officer for Harris County, Lt. Holland Jones said during a brief news conference this morning.

Clopton’s condition is “uncertain” after being in surgery for more than three hours to remove a bullet lodged in his abdomen and another bullet near his heart, police said.

Holland said Clopton is expected to remain in surgery for the next several hours.

Authorities said the deputy was performing a routine traffic stop with a deputy-in-training when the suspect, not connected to the traffic stop, approached him from behind and ambushed him.

A person matching the description of the suspect in the shooting is being questioned by investigators. The person hasn’t been arrested or charged but officials also said authorities aren’t searching for anyone else in the shooting.
