SC Body Camera Law Not Meeting Full Requirements

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley told a prison inmate this week that state law requires every police officer to wear a body camera, “so if something happens we can see it.”
But it doesn’t.
It could be years before the law she signed last June leads to the cameras’ widespread use.
And for officers wearing body cameras, the law sharply restricts who gets to view the video.
The Republican governor told inmates Monday that “every one of those officers has to wear a body camera.”
The law requires law enforcement agencies to adopt policies on body cameras, but they don’t have to follow them until the agencies receive “full funding.”
How much that will take is unknown.
Departments won’t see any state money for the cameras until at least June.
