RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)  – The Richland County Fire Marshal’s Office on Friday said a fire that destroyed several apartments and resulted in the death of a dog was caused by a child playing with a lighter.

Authorities responded to the blaze Wednesday afternoon at an apartment complex on Longcreek Drive.

The fire, which affected 12 units, started in a bedroom of an upstairs apartment unit, fire officials say.

No one was seriously injured in the blaze, however a dog located in a lower level apartment succumbed to the effects of the fire and died shortly after being rescued.

The Red Cross is providing help for the displaced residents.

Thursday’s fire is the second one at the apartment complex recently. The cause of a fire in April was ruled undetermined.

Fire officials urge parents to keep matches and lighters in safe locations out of the sight and reach of small children. Parents should also explain to children the consequences of playing with the items.
