WATCH: Bourbon Barrel Maker Invests in Bamberg

BAMBERG, S.C. (WOLO) – A bourbon barrel maker is investing $3.6 million in Bamberg County, bringing 57 jobs in the next five years.

“Black Water Barrels” is in the process of setting up shop at 3941 Main Highway in Bamberg, in the building that housed Ziegler Chevrolet Dealership for years.

“I’m excited about taking something and preserving the heritage of this building that’s always been here,” President Greg Pierce said, “and revitalizing Bamberg.”

Pierce and his team will be manufacturing 53, 60 and 30-gallon barrels, made of American White Oak harvested from the Appalachian Mountains. The traditional 53-gallon barrel will be targeted to bourbon makers. The others will appeal to whiskey makers, craft distillers, craft brewers, winemakers and cider makers.

They chose Bamberg after looking at options in eight counties in three states.

“The people of Bamberg were just so nice the first time we came to town,” Pierce said.

In the coming weeks, Pierce will be coordinating a 12-thousand-square-foot expansion, the installation of machinery coming from Germany and Scotland, and major renovations. His goal is to have things running by June 1.

“There are very few places in the United States you can go and see an actual barrel being made in the old-style cooperage form, and you’ll be able to do that here.”

Pierce got into the cooperage business from the liquor distribution business. He says he was constantly being asked about where to get barrels.

In the first year, the output goal is 30,000 barrels.

“It’s a very labor-intensive process,” Pierce says, “so it’s very unique when you see a log transformed into a barrel.”

From mechanics, to laborers and machine operators, Black Water Barrels is looking for employees of all skill levels, who are ready to learn. If you fit the bill, email info@blackwaterbarrels.com. The company estimates hiring to begin in April 2016.
