Rep. Gunn To Leave Statehouse

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Representative Anton Gunn says he plans to take a job as Southeast regional director for the U.S. Health and Human Services Department in Atlanta and will not seek re-election to the House seat he won in 2008.

The State of Columbia reported that the Columbia Democrat sent an e-mail to supporters Friday announcing his decision. It was unclear whether Gunn would  resign his seat or simply drop out of his re-election bid in the fall. A phone message left at his office Saturday was not returned.

Gunn served as political director for Barack Obama’s 2008 Democratic presidential primary win in South Carolina.

As a regional director for Health and Human Services, he will oversee health care and social programs in eight Southern states including South Carolina.
