Amazon Deal, Round Two
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — It’s Round Two in the proposed sales tax exemption for amazon.com, and the gloves come off. More than 100 people, including lawmakers, rallied on the steps of the State House Tuesday in an effort to convince the legislature to turn around its initial 71-47 vote to not grant special tax exemption status for the online retailer. Last month, the vote sent amazon.com packing with questions looming about the future of a construction site in Lexington County already underway. Small business owners saw the decision as a major victory for Main St. businesses, while lawmakers contemplated finding a loophole. They did. Lawmakers plan to vote again on the issue Tuesday. Supporters say amazon.com will provide a $60 million annual payroll and create 3,000 full time and part time jobs. The opposition, whose members also protested at the State House, believes the company will rob shut down hundreds of small businesses.
