Church sues over fellowship hall near air base

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A church near the Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort is suing Beaufort County after it rejected plans for a fellowship hall. The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Grays Hill Baptist Church wants an exception to the rules limiting development near the base. The suit says the church submitted a master plan in 1996 and the county approved plans for a second building. But when the church asked to build the fellowship hall four years ago, the request was denied. The county attorney says the building could mean larger gatherings on the property. The Marine Corps opposes the fellowship hall because it is in a zone where there could be aircraft accidents. Multi-family homes, churches, auditoriums and schools are incompatible with guidelines for such areas now. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved.)
