Haley assails Gingrich’s Medicare plan criticism

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says Newt Gingrich’s criticism of a sweeping Medicare overhaul proposal won’t play in early voting South Carolina and is calling on the presidential hopeful to explain himself. Haley is the latest conservative to criticize Gingrich for saying that a Republican proposal to move Medicare to a voucher system was a radical change and not a good way for a free society to operate. He called it “right-wing social engineering” during an appearance Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” South Carolina is a key early primary state. Haley says South Carolina voters want conservative cuts and Gingrich’s remarks go against what people here think. Haley says Gingrich now has got to answer to South Carolina voters. A Gingrich spokesman did not immediately respond to Haley’s criticism. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
