SRS contractors to offer more employee buyouts

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Three companies that employ thousands at the Savannah River Site near Aiken are offering buyouts to hundreds of employees before implementing layoffs later this year. Officials with Savannah River Remediation and Wackenhut Services Inc. said Monday they each planned to offer employees the opportunity to first leave their jobs voluntarily this spring. Savannah River Nuclear Solutions said in December it would lay off more than 1,000 workers in addition to 300 who opted to leave voluntarily. The company did not say Monday how many additional employees it planned to cut. Work at the site that once produced plutonium and tritium for atomic bombs is now focused mostly on research and environmental cleanup. In 2009, Savannah River received $1.6 billion in stimulus cash to create and save about 3,000 jobs.
