SC budget panel nixes break for daycare licensing
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Large daycare centers in South Carolina won’t get a one-year reprieve from state inspections aimed at giving them a break from licensing hassles.
A state budget conference committee trying to work out differences in House and Senate spending plans dropped a proposal that extended the licenses from two to three years on Monday.
Supporters had said the break would save day care operators some of the usual hassle of licensing. But opponents worried it would reduce oversight of facilities.
The panel also dropped plans to turn inmates who are illegal immigrants over to federal authorities for deportation after they complete a portion of their sentences.
