Compromise reached on $6B SC spending plan

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina businesses will get a $146 million bailout on unemployment taxes after a budget conference agreed to less money for public schools as final deals were reached in a compromise version of $6 billion state spending plan.

A conference committee agreed Thursday to a final version of the proposed budget. It could be approved as early as Wednesday and sent to Gov. Nikki Haley to consider vetoes.

The biggest money issue involved $210 million in unexpected tax collections. The Senate split that money with $100 million used to lower unemployment taxes for employers with records of firing people and $105 million for schools. The panel used a House proposal with $146 million for businesses and $56 million for schools.
