“Choose Life” Plates OK’d In N.C.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ Motorists around North Carolina could see the anti-abortion message “Choose Life” showing up on a new specialty license plate in a few months. The House voted 68-to-44 on Saturday to give final legislative approval for the state to make available dozens of new specialty license plates. Drivers can choose the plates for a $25 extra annual fee. One of those reads “Choose Life.” Nonprofit pregnancy counseling centers opposed to abortion would collect $15 from each plate sold. The plates could start showing up once 300 people sign up. The Republican-led Legislature rejected several efforts by Democrats to add a license plate with the abortion rights message “Respect Choice.” The measure next heads to Governor Beverly Perdue, who will decide whether to accept or veto it.
