SC shrimp season opening after cold delay

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The commercial shrimping season is opening on the South Carolina coast after almost a delay of almost a month.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the season that opened Wednesday was delayed because of unusual cold last winter that killed shrimp and decimated the spring shrimping season.

But the Department of Natural Resources says tests last week showed that brown summer shrimp are now out along the coast.

There are about 400 licensed commercial shrimp boats in South Carolina. That’s only about a quarter of the number of boats that trawled along the coast 30 years ago.
