Roth to Start for Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)–South Carolina will go with ace pitcher Michael Roth in its Friday night matchup with Virginia at the College World Series. The Gamecocks can advance to the championship series with a win over the Cavaliers. Virginia would have to defeat South Carolina twice to advance to the best-of-3 finale. South Carolina coach Ray Tanner had to choose between Roth (13-3) and his third starter Forrest Koumas. Roth pitched in the Gamecocks opener at the College World Series, going into the eighth inning of South Carolina’s 5-4 win over Texas A&M. Koumas has not yet pitched in Omaha. Roth brings a 0.97 ERA into the matchup with Virginia ace Danny Hultzen, who was selected second overall by Seattle in this month’s Major League Baseball draft.
