New mayor questions museum planned in Wellford
WELLFORD, S.C. (AP) — The man who becomes mayor of Wellford later this week says he doesn’t know how the Spartanburg County town of about 2,000 people will pay to operate a new museum.
The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports the small museum in a former post office on Main Street in Wellford is almost finished. Outgoing Mayor Sallie Peake hopes to have the history museum finished by Thursday, the day she leaves office.
City records show about $50,000 in hospitality tax funds has been spent to renovate the building and create the museum.
New Mayor Tommy Watson takes over Friday and says he thinks the city could have done something more worthwhile with the money.
Watson says he doesn’t know how the town will pay the power bill for the museum.
