House Overrides Vetoes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina state representatives want tax money to keep going to public television. By wide margins, the Republican-ruled House on Wednesday overrode three measures vetoed by GOP Gov. Nikki Haley that dented South Carolina Education Television budgets. The vetoes now head to the Senate. House Majority Leader Kenny Bingham drew cheers as he told colleagues the governor sat in budget talks and still vetoed the money despite agreements she made. Those deals allowed SCETV to bill state agencies for programs state’s taxpayers have covered for years. That included nearly $5 million for teacher training the state’s public schools. Haley says the agency should raise private money instead of using taxpayer cash. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
