SC gov’s 2012 primary funding vetoes overridden
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s vetoes of state cash for the first-in-the-South Republican presidential primary have been defeated in the Legislature.
The House on Wednesday voted 102-6 and 100-7 to override Haley’s vetoes for funding the 2012 primary. The Senate followed later with two veto override votes.
The budget measures would allow up to $680,000 of Election Commission funds to be used for the primary.
Haley says state political parties need to raise money for the balloting.
The state Election Commission estimates the 2012 contest will cost more than $1 million.
