SC Legislature overrides gov’s public TV vetoes
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina legislators want tax money to keep going to public television.
By wide margins, the Republican-ruled House and Senate on Wednesday overrode three measures vetoed by GOP Gov. Nikki Haley that dented South Carolina Education Television budgets.
House Majority Leader Kenny Bingham drew cheers as he told colleagues the governor’s staff signed off on a deal for the agency’s funding yet the governor turned around and vetoed it.
Those deals allowed SCETV to bill state agencies for programs state’s taxpayers have covered for years.
That included nearly $5 million for teacher training the state’s public schools.
Haley had said the agency should raise private money instead of using taxpayer cash for its operations.
