350-acre wildfire still burns in Horry County

CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — A wildfire that started over the holiday weekend continues to burn in Horry County.

Officials said Monday afternoon that the fire near Conway had burned 350 acres and is only 60 percent contained.

But that is a much safer situation than when the blaze started Sunday. Officials called the fire very aggressive and worried it could spread to nearby homes. But firefighters fought it back and no evacuations were ordered.

The Horry County fire is one of several blazes across the Southeast causing a smoky haze across much of South Carolina. Health officials have warned people with breathing problems not to spend a lot of time outside
