8-year-old dies in ATV wreck

COWARD, S.C. (AP) — A Florence County boy has died after a wreck on an all-terrain vehicle on which he was a passenger.

Coroner M.G. Matthews says Spencer McGee was pronounced dead at a Florence hospital shortly after noon Monday.

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Nunn says the victim was on an ATV driven by a 13-year-old near the Coward community.

Nunn says the boy was not wearing a helmet.

South Lynches Fire Chief Sam Brockington says a deer ran in front of the ATV and it flipped over and the boy was thrown off. Brockington says firefighters got the child out of some woods and delivered him to an EMS crew who took him to the hospital.

A new law that took effect Friday prohibits children younger than 16 from carrying passengers.
