Tuesday morning, eleven children who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001 and since that day, broke ground at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center for a memorial that will soon become a tribute for them and their families. “We would slip and slide during the summer,” says Hannah Frye. It may be summertime, but Hannah Frye will not have the chance to slip and slide with her cousin Thomas, this year. Instead, on Tuesday morning, Hannah spent time remembering Thomas at the 9/11 Remembrance Memorial ground breaking ceremony. “He was very close to me, and I miss him a lot,” says Frye. Thomas was killed in Baghdad in 2004, and Tuesday Hannah honored his memory. “It felt good to actually do something for him and remember him,” says Frye. Hannah joined ten other children to break ground on teh memorial that Daniel Hennigan, Founder of Chairman of the 9/11 Remembrance Memorial, says represents all the lives lost. “It’s not just a fireman memorial or a police memorial, all of our first responders are honored and remembered here,” says Hennigan. When complete, the memorial will include two 25 foot granite towers along with two steel beams. The beams will cross one another, in order to represent the unity of America after that tragic day. Hennigan says, it will soon become a place of unity for the families as well. “This memorial is one place where all family members and loved ones can come and they can remember their loved ones who paid the supreme sacrifice,” says Hennigan Those family members, include Hannah Frye. “It just represents him and what he did for our freedom,” says Frye. Hannah says she hopes others see the memorial that way too. “I just hope people see it as a remembrance to everybody who fought and lost their lives and the people that are still fighting,” says Frye. Although the project took a major step Tuesday morning, it is still far from a reality, as fundraising efforts are still underway. If you would like to donate just visit www.scremembers911.com
