Pair of bears seen in downtown York this weekend

YORK, S.C. (AP) — Police say they were flooded with calls after a pair of bears spent most of the weekend in downtown York.

Authorities say the bears mostly stayed away from people. The number of calls about them had dwindled by Sunday night.

York Police Chief Andy Robinson told The Herald of Rock Hill his officers monitored the calls to make sure the adult bear and a smaller, younger bear didn’t get aggressive or become trapped. He hoped the bears would safely head out of town to a better habitat.

Sarah Lane says one of the bears got stuck in her backyard Sunday morning and tore down a fence getting away.
