SC students launch abandoned boat effort

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Three South Carolina middle school students don’t like seeing abandoned boats in rivers and waterways along the Grand Strand and have decided to do something about it.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported the students from Ocean Bay Middle School have designed a website focusing on the problem. The site and an essay about the issue recently won them the $25,000 grand prize in the Christopher Columbus Awards.

That’s a nationwide program that challenges middle school students to look for ways to create positive change.

The website includes the coordinates of five abandoned boats in Horry County.

This week the students will ask county council to approve their plan to post signs near the abandoned vessels and put computer-controlled lights near the boats.
