Former PA senator back campaigning in SC

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum says a balanced budget amendment is the best way to get federal government’s spending under control.

The Republican presidential hopeful said during a stop in South Carolina on Tuesday that while he would like to see spending cuts and caps, the current debate over the federal spending limit provides an opportunity to pass a balanced budget amendment.

The former Pennsylvania lawmaker said while such an amendment wouldn’t take effect for years, it would put the nation on what he called “a responsible glide path” to get spending under control.

Santorum met with reporters following a visit to a crisis pregnancy center. He is making a two-day campaign swing through the state.

South Carolina’s GOP presidential primary is the first in the South.
