Not the shells they were looking for at SC beach
FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Mortar shells are probably not what beachgoers were looking for on Folly Beach.
But that’s what some visitors found Tuesday afternoon when they came across two of the shells.
Public Safety Chief Dennis Brown says erosion on the beach is likely to expose more old war explosives.
The Charleston County sheriff’s office bomb squad and the unit from the State Law Enforcement Division responded. Brown says they told him the shells appear to be from World War II or earlier.
He says the area was used as an artillery range years ago.
A crew from Charleston Air Force Base then responded to deal with the old military ordinance.
Authorities cleared Folly Beach County Park around 6:30 p.m. and the devices were detonated without incident.
