Charleston joint military base gets new commander

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The Air Force and Navy military base at Charleston is getting a new commander.

In a ceremony Thursday, the installation is welcoming Col. Richard McComb and bidding farewell to Col. Martha Meeker.

Meeker is transferring to the U.S. European Command in Mons, Belgium, where she will be the special assistant to the head of the U.S. European Command and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe.

During Meeker’s tenure, Joint Base Charleston was established as one of the Department of Defense’s first 12 joint bases, combining Charleston Air Force Base and the Naval Weapons Station into one installation.

McComb last served as chief of security forces for the installations and mission support group at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
