Patriots Point working on future development plan

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — The Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant is developing a plan to turn the attraction into a nationally known World War II museum.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports specifics are expected by year’s end.

Museum executive director Mac Burdette says he wants people to know a plan is forthcoming and mute criticism the agency is doing nothing.

The museum owes the state $9 million for a loan that paid for repairs to the destroyer Laffey. Work to shore up the aircraft carrier Yorktown could cost $100 million

Burdette says the plan envisions developing 36 acres into a destination like the World War II museum in New Orleans. Patriots Point is working with the nonprofit Patriots Point Foundation on the effort.
