SC man wrongly accused of not paying utility bills
MAULDIN, S.C. (AP) — The CEO of Greenville Water System says he will personally apologize to a customer wrongly accused of not paying two bills back in 2001.
WYFF-TV reports the utility sent past-due notices to Randy Massengale of Mauldin on the decade-old bills. Massengale says he called saying there must be a mistake, but employees refused to believe him and told him to pay up.
Massengale says he tossed the bill aside until a utility representative knocked on his door, threatening to turn off his water. After a frantic search, Massengale found his bank statement and check register proving he’d paid 10 years ago.
WYFF contacted utility CEO David Bereskin, who called the case a fluke. He says it’s amazing that someone saved 10-year-old records. He says he will apologize in a letter.
