SC man charged with impersonating police officer

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says a man impersonated one of his deputies and tried to extort money from a woman.

Lott said 40-year-old Andrew Addy called a woman last month, saying he was a Richland County narcotics officer and there was a warrant out for her arrest. The sheriff says the fake officer then told her the charge would go away if she paid him $150.

Deputies say the woman met with Addy, giving him $40 and promising to pay the rest later.

Lott says his deputies have received several complaints of someone trying to run a similar scam and continue to investigate Addy.

Addy is charged with impersonating a law enforcement officer. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.
