Haley to announce jobs in native Bamberg County

BAMBERG, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will travel to the county she grew up in to announce new jobs.

Haley’s office says she will make an economic development announcement Thursday afternoon in rural Bamberg County, which has a population of fewer than 16,000 people. The Republican governor grew up in Bamberg.

The regional economic development group says Haley and local officials will make the announcement in Denmark, at the site of the former NIBCO plant.

SouthernAlliance Carolina marketing director Kay Maxwell characterized the forthcoming news as the biggest jobs announcement in Bamberg County in memory.

The NIBCO plant made PVC plumbing fittings.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that 130 lost their jobs when it closed in 2007.

Denmark is about 55 miles south of Columbia.
