Police: Columbia hotel clerk kills robbery suspect

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a Columbia hotel clerk shot and killed a suspected robber.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says a man went into a Days Inn at around 6 a.m. Monday. The man put a weapon against the clerk’s throat and told the woman it was a robbery.

Authorities are still investigating, but deputies say the clerk then shot the man in the upper body with a small-caliber pistol.

The man was dead when deputies arrived. Authorities say the clerk was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Neither person’s name has been released.
