SC woman gets 10 years for stealing donation jar

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — A Boiling Springs woman who pleaded guilty to stealing a collection jar for cancer donations has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after lying to a judge about being on drugs.

Prosecutors told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg (http://bit.ly/o2eHaS) that 38-year-old Julie Cothran told the judge Thursday she had turned her life around and wasn’t using drugs. The judge then sent her for a drug test, and it showed she had recently used cocaine.

Authorities say the jar had about $20 inside when Cothran stole it in February. She pleaded guilty to petit larceny, and prosecutors say the judge sentenced her to the maximum of 10 years because her drug use lie made him wonder if she was being honest about feeling remorse for stealing the donations.
