Truck driver likely asleep before fatal I-85 crash

ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say a wreck on Interstate 85 in Anderson County that killed two tractor-trailer drivers and a man in a pickup truck was likely caused when one of the 18-wheeler drivers fell asleep.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office said an autopsy on 69-year-old Eddie Wyatt didn’t find any major health problems that could have led to Saturday’s crash, but his medical history revealed a sleep disorder.

Authorities say Wyatt’s truck ran off the road and when he tried to get back on the pavement, he lost control, dragging a pickup and a sports utility vehicle into oncoming traffic where they slammed into another 18-wheeler.

The driver of the other rig and the pickup driver also were killed. A couple in the SUV has been released from the hospital.
