Canadian firm wants SC farmers to plant flax
KINGSTREE, S.C. (AP) — A Canadian business is trying to recruit South Carolina farmers to grow flax to help its new business in Kingstree.
Naturally Advanced Technologies is working with Carolina Eastern Precision Ag of Pamplico to get new growers for flax and give advice on how to grow the slender-stalked plant.
The meeting starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brown’s BBQ in Kingstree.
The company hopes to get 15,000 acres of flax grown this winter so it can begin processing the plant into fiber.
Flax has long been an important plant to humans. The ancient Egyptians used the plant to make linen.
