Woman claiming cancer given $50,000 by friend

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Police in Charleston are looking for a woman who they say claimed to be a cancer patient and scammed a friend out of more than $50,000.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported http://bit.ly/pz13RY the victim says the woman moved into her house last September, saying she had cancer and no money to pay for treatment.

The victim did not want to be identified. She wrote the woman checks for more than $53,000 but later began to suspect something was wrong.

The victim hired a private investigator who discovered the woman was not a cancer patient. The victim confronted the woman in June and says she admitted she wasn’t being treated.

Police are looking for 41-year-old Brandi Michelle Reeves on charges of obtaining goods by false pretenses.
