Youth sports safety clinic on tap for Charleston
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Young athletes, their parents and their coaches are attending a sports safety seminar on the South Carolina coast.
The Sunday seminar at Joe Riley Park in Charleston deals with safety practicing for fall sports, including avoiding heat-related illnesses. It’s sponsored by Safe Kids USA, a coalition of groups working to make sports safer for kids.
The seminar includes middle and high school football, soccer and tennis coaches as well as athletes and their parents.
The Medical University of South Carolina reports treating 164 athletes under age 17 for sports-related injuries during the past five years. About a quarter of those were for heat-related illnesses.
