College of Charleston finds room for 144 students

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The College of Charleston says it has been able to find rooms for an extra 144 students for the fall semester.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported (http://bit.ly/pH2rvz) that students moved into the downtown campus last weekend.

Housing dean John Campbell says the on-campus housing crunch was caused by an increase in freshman enrollment. Officials expect nearly 2,400 first-year students this year, up about 350 from last year.

Campbell says three students were put in some rooms designed for two in one dorm and five people were put in some suites designed to hold four students.

College officials are considering working with a private developer to build additional apartment-style student housing within walking distance of the campus.
