COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — After one police dog retired a couple of weeks ago, one passed away last week and one prepares to turn in her badge, the Columbia Police Department needs new K9 officers and the community’s help. The department invited media crews to Columbia’s Memorial Park recently to see its K9 officers in action. Two mock demonstrations involving apprehending a suspect on the run and retrieving illegal narcotics hidden in a truck, allowed cameras to capture the agility and intellect of the dogs, one of which is retiring soon. CPD hopes others in the community, like the neighbors of Heathwood Park, chip in to help fund replacement officers. Heathwood raise more than $1,000 to purchase dogs’ bullet proof vests. If you or your community would like to assist the department in making sure it’s fully staffed, contact the Columbia Police Foundation at 803-545-3500 or 803-429-8101.
