SCarolina’s offense improves in latest scrimmage

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina’s offense bounced back from an awful weekend scrimmage with a solid performance Wednesday at Williams-Brice Stadium.
Quarterbacks Stephen Garcia and Connor Shaw threw touchdown passes and combined to go 17 for 22 for 236 yards. Garcia had a 38-yard touchdown pass to Damiere Byrd, while Shaw threw a 37-yard scoring pass to Lamar Scruggs.
Shon Carson had a 3-yard TD run, set up by a 63-yard pass from reserve quarterback Andrew Clifford to D.L. Moore.
Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was encouraged with the showing, especially after Saturday’s scrimmage when the offense was held without a touchdown. Shaw missed that session because of an injured thumb.
No. 12 South Carolina opens the season against East Carolina at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 3.
